Meet Dr. Akosa
Amechi Akosa is an experienced mental health professional with decades of clinical, research, and international service experience in counseling and social work. He earned his Master’s degree in Social Work and holds dual doctoral degrees in Special Education and Educational Leadership from Clark Atlanta University and Argosy University.
Dr. Akosa has worked across a wide range of clinical and community based settings. He was one of the original recipients of a federal five million dollar grant awarded in partnership with Grady Memorial Hospital and Emory University Hospitals to conduct research focused on Long COVID. He also served for twelve years as an independent contractor with the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families, providing counseling services to children and families. Additionally, he worked as a counselor at Kadlec Hospital in Richland, Washington, for five years.
His work has extended internationally, having traveled to 104 countries in a pro bono role with the Centers for Disease Control, including counseling families in Kibera, Kenya, who lost loved ones to AIDS. He has also been involved with the Worldwide Fistula Fund in Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Uganda, Eritrea, and Kenya. Earlier in his career, Dr. Akosa served as a Senior Counselor Provider III within Georgia’s Department of Juvenile Justice, providing mental health services across 39 counties in juvenile facilities.
In his clinical work, Dr. Akosa provides psychotherapy focused on assessing and evaluating client needs, strengths, and resources to develop individualized treatment plans. His services include emotional support and guidance, crisis intervention, advocacy, and connecting clients to appropriate services and resources to support safety, stability, and long term wellbeing.
